Research Results 

The State of Washington studied Safe Babies, Safe Moms programs in comparison to a similar group of people who did not participate in a Safe Babies, Safe Moms program. The State also studied Safe Babies, Safe Moms clients before, during and after Safe Babies,
Safe Moms involvement.

Key findings are as follows.

The birth of low weight infants decreased by 66%. (Low birth weight babies are associated with higher post-natal medical costs.)

The rate of accepted CPS referrals decreased by 35%.

Arrest rates for SBSM clients who also received Chemical Dependency treatment decreased by 50%.

67% of clients used a Medicaid-paid family planning method.

34% of clients began using more
effective family planning methods.
